What you can watch free on Candy Shorts

The free tier on Candy Shorts is unusually generous in structure and unusually easy to misjudge in practice. Two episodes of every series, permanently, no card. Whether that is enough to decide on a series depends entirely on which series you picked.

What free actually gets you

An account costs nothing and takes an email address. With it, episodes 1 and 2 of every series in the catalogue play in full. Not trimmed, not watermarked, not a trailer: the actual episodes.

Multiply that across a hundred-plus series and the free tier is a couple of hundred episodes. Nobody watches it that way, but it is worth knowing that browsing widely costs nothing at all.

What it does not get you

Everything from episode 3. No trial, no ad-supported unlock, no way to buy a single series. Series that run to fifteen episodes leave thirteen behind the subscription, which is a very different proposition from the three left by a five-episode run.

Which series use the free two well

This is where the free tier gets interesting, and it is the single most useful thing we can tell you.

Some series front-load. Stepsister Summer puts its hook at the end of episode 2, so the free run genuinely tells you whether to continue. One Room with My Fiancee’s Mother deploys its entire premise in episode 1, so the free half tells you everything, arguably too much.

Others do the opposite, and it works against them. Behind on Rent has its best moment at the end of episode 3, one past the paywall, and its two free episodes are the weakest in the run. Judged on the free tier alone it looks like a worse series than it is.

The lesson is that a free sample is not a neutral sample. Every review here says where the good part sits relative to the paywall.

A sensible way to use it

Pick four or five series across different intensity levels, watch the free two of each, and only then decide whether the format is worth a subscription to you. That costs nothing and takes under half an hour. It also tells you more than any review, including ours.

If the format does not hold you across four free openings, the subscription will not fix it.
